SYNOPSIS
In a small, illegal shanty town surrounding the railroad station of Manpur lives a marginal humanity who eke out their living by stealing food from the passing trains, ignored by the sympathetic station master . Jinti, a beautiful unwed woman works in town as a housekeeper. Somra, his son, loves to fly kites . Mathura, one of the head thieves, keeps a hidden relationship with Jinti. Mathura dreams of a better destiny and degrade himself dealing with police and corrupt politicians. Against them, Rabbani, the idealist new commissioner of the Railway Protection Force, who tries to make elvove their minds set and fights against corruption. Shaddy business dealt around a bonfire, meanwhile, in the sky are flying the kites.

Goutam Ghose was a strident political activist and a photo journalist who toured the country to document images of life and times in India. His encounter with reality, in stark close-up, inspired him to use cinema as an effective instrument of self-expression. One that makes a powerful and lasting statement. Hungry Autum was his debut, a prize winning documentary.
Goutam graduated from the University of Calcutta and then became involved in the theatre as entertainer and director. He acted in Grihajudda by Buddahaeb Dasgupta in 1982.
His first film Mabhoomi depicted the uprising of the workers against the Nizam of Hyderabad. It was a moving account of the era of Independence struggle, from 1930 to 1948. Made in Telugu, it is based on a short story by noted Hindi Writer Krishna Chander. His next film Dakhal in Bengali, Goutam, became a telling portrayal of the life of a nomadic tribe and depicted the heroic attempts of a woman to strike new roots. After Dakhal his subsequent films are Antarjali Yatra , Padma Nadir Majhi, Paar, Patang, Guida, Dekha, Abar Aranya, y Antarjali Yatra.
Goutam has made also a few documentaries; Mohar and Beyond the Himalayas that bagged the Best Documentary award at the 42nd Filmmare Awards Nite in 1997.Goutam Ghose has been conferred the prestigious De Sica Award for highest achievements in Films in 1997.
